| Description | Part 2, Folios 41-42. From T. To Thomas Newton, at Gray's Inn, London. Place: Lille, France. A letter, sent via Callis [Calais] in which the writer mentions his arrival after his 'flight', his meeting with Lord Clare and discussions concerning his 'distress', and a memorial Lord Clare promised to pass to Count [Comte de] Maurepas with 'proper remonstrance' when he arrives in Paris [France]. The writer also mentions an orphan left with the recipient who he hopes speaks Spanish by now. Following the sign-off, a separate hand continues, mentioning: gratitude for services rendered to 'poor Talbot', who has brought the recipient pamphlets; Mr Wall [General Richard Wall y Devereux, émigré Franco-Irish statesman in the service of Spain]; a banker's draught drawn on Waters [of Paris] for Billy; Jack Ryan; Pusquin; and Fitzpatrick. [Dated to conform with Maurepas's tenure as Secretary of Marine]. |
