Description

Part 1, Folio 51. From Aneas McBean. To Lord Viscount [Charles] Townshend.

Memorial and petition of Aneas McBean, asking to be set free. He had information about measures taken for raising an army of [Jacobite] rebels and told Mr James Dunbar, merchant in Inverness, so he could let the Court know. McBean was later forced into the rebellion, but was trying to encourage mutiny and desertion and was giving intelligence to the Duke of Argyle [Argyll, General John Campbell]; since he was so sympathetic to the Protestant's interests, the Earl of Seaforth [William Mackenzie] ordered to 'waste plunder and destroy' McBean's father's goods and effects, and carry off his cattle, which ruined the family. McBean offered himself as evidence against the rebels and now feels that he has done 'all the service in his power'.
